Inlays and Onlays

Inlays/Onlays are often used in place of fillings to replace small amounts of decay in your tooth. They’re also referred to as partial crowns. They usually cover a lot more than fillings do, and these days can be made from gold/porcelain/or resin.

A dental inlay refers to a type of filling that covers the center of the tooth, while an onlay refers to covering the cusp of a tooth. Both types of restorations are bonded to the tooth’s surface and are matched to the color of the teeth surrounding it.

Both inlays and onlays are bonded to the surface of damaged teeth and matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for an inlay or onlay?

If you have moderate damage to your tooth due to decay, then you might be a candidate for a dental inlay/onlay if you’re looking for an alternative to a full dental crown. Schedule a consultation with us if you’re interested in seeing if a dental inlay/onlay is the right option for you.

What should I expect when I get my inlay or onlay restoration?

It will take a few different appointments to complete your inlay/onlay treatment. First, we will create an impression of your tooth that will be used to mold your new restoration. During the meantime, we can have a temporary restoration fitted while you wait for your permanent one to be completed. Once your permanent restoration has been created, you will come back to have your temporary restoration removed and your permanent one placed on the surface of your tooth.

Do I need to follow any post-treatment care guidelines?

If you do receive a temporary restoration, special care will be needed while it is in place. It’s important to avoid foods that can cause damage to the temporary inlay/onlay, this includes sticky and hard foods. Once your permanent restoration has been placed, you can go back to your normal diet and hygiene habits.
