Crowns and Bridges
Both dental crowns and caps are custom-fitted dental restorations that are used to fix fractured teeth and replace missing teeth. Crowns or “caps” are placed on top of natural teeth or dental implants to fix the fractures and imperfections.
While bridges are used to fill in gaps that were left behind as a result of missing teeth, these are kept in place by natural teeth or even crowns that are near the space.
Both types of restorations are bonded in place by a licensed dentist and aren’t easily removable. Dental crowns and bridges are used by patients to achieve both function and the aesthetic of healthy and natural teeth when looking for a way to restore their smile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a crown or bridge right for me?
If so, you could be a candidate for tooth-colored fillings. Schedule a consultation with your dentist to see if composite fillings are the right option for you.
What should I expect when I have my crown or bridge placed?
Once the fillings are placed on your teeth, the composite material is then cured with light at your dentist’s office. Immediately after your appointment, you should be able to return to your normal oral care routine and activity. You may experience some sensitivity on your new fillings for the first few days after your appointment to hot and cold, it’s normal. If the sensitivity lasts longer than a week though, then please contact your dentist.
Do I need to follow any post-treatment care guidelines?
When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll have a local anesthetic applied to your teeth and gum near the area where you’ll be receiving your fillings. Once fully numb, the unhealthy portion of your teeth will be removed and replaced with the new composite filling. Once the filling is placed, an oral safe resin will be applied over the filling and cured with a handheld light for just a minute. Afterward, the new filling will be shaped and shined, then the procedure will be concluded.
