Composite Fillings
Designed to look natural and discreet
Composite fillings are tooth-colored fillings, designed to look natural and discreet. The idea of composite fillings is to blend in with your teeth, in comparison to amalgam fillings that are darker colored and easier to spot.
Made of ceramic and plastic compounds, composite fillings chemically bond themselves to the teeth for a perfect look.
Typically, dentists use composite fillings for more noticeable teeth, rather than back molars. With recent advancements in dental technology, composite fillings can now be used on teeth that are more worn and less visible by your dentist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a damaged filling, fractured tooth, or a cavity?
If so, you could be a candidate for tooth-colored fillings. Schedule a consultation with your dentist to see if composite fillings are the right option for you.
What type of post-treatment care is required after getting a composite filling?
Once the fillings are placed on your teeth, the composite material is then cured with light at your dentist’s office. Immediately after your appointment, you should be able to return to your normal oral care routine and activity. You may experience some sensitivity on your new fillings for the first few days after your appointment to hot and cold, it’s normal. If the sensitivity lasts longer than a week though, then please contact your dentist.
What should I expect if my dentist decides a composite filling is right for me?
When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll have a local anesthetic applied to your teeth and gum near the area where you’ll be receiving your fillings. Once fully numb, the unhealthy portion of your teeth will be removed and replaced with the new composite filling. Once the filling is placed, an oral safe resin will be applied over the filling and cured with a handheld light for just a minute. Afterward, the new filling will be shaped and shined, then the procedure will be concluded.
